Liposuction also called lipoplasty or suction lipectomy is the surgical removal of localized or regional excess fatty tissue. Sometimes, diet and exercise may not just help get rid of stubborn pockets of fat.

The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider liposuction:

i) You have a minimal amount of excess skin and good skin elasticity. Loss of skin elasticity with age can compromise liposuction results, but if your skin has maintained its elasticity, age alone is not a contraindication for liposuction surgery.

ii) You have localized deposits of fat in your abdomen, arms, thighs and/or neck, which may be the result of genetics and which do not disappear with regular exercise and proper diet.

iii) You are physically fit, no more then 20 pounds overweight, and your weight is stable. However, if you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight or even gain weight (for example, due to pregnancy), this is not the time to undergo liposuction surgery.

iv) Keep in mind that liposuction may not remove cellulite and cannot tighten loose skin. However, our plastic surgeon in Pittsburgh will be able to recommend other procedures to improve those conditions.

If you are in good general health and have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure. Most people are able to get up and move around as soon as the treatment is finished and after the effects of anesthesia and sedation have worn off. You can return to your normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable, although this may take several days to a few weeks. Most people can return to work within a few days. Recovery may take longer if large areas were treated. For more information about Liposuction click here or Call us at 412-963-6677.
