Dr. Valenzuela is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine. Upon earning his medical degree, he started General Surgery Residency at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, and completed General Surgery Residency at Sinai Hospital of Detroit. He was accepted to the Plastic Surgery Residency program at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he received a well-rounded training with extensive experience in surgery of the hand, congenital deformities in children, aesthetic surgery, and reconstructive surgery for cancer and trauma. He spent his eighth year of post-graduate training as the Amelia Brown Frazier Microsurgery Fellow at the University of Louisville.
Before finishing this fellowship in 1987, Dr. Valenzuela joined Operation Smile in a two-week mission to the Philippines, where he used the techniques he learned from Dr. Pool in repairing cleft lips and cleft palate deformities.
In 1987, Dr. Valenzuela joined the medical staff at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. In 1988, he opened his private practice in Southport. In 1990, he passed his Certification exam and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He served as Chairman of the Plastic Surgery Service of Methodist Hospital from 1997 to 2000, during the transition period resulting from the creation of Clarian Health.
Dr. Valenzuela has been a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for many years. He was an active member of the Ohio Valley Society for Plastic Surgeons, the International Society for Burn Injuries, The Indiana State Medical Association, and the Indianapolis Medical Society. He attends symposia in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery regularly and maintains current knowledge in cutting edge developments in his specialty.
At the end of 2005, he closed his private practice, and joined Sparrow Health System in Lansing, Michigan beginning March 2006, to provide Plastic Surgery services at Sparrow. After four years, he moved to Sayre, Pennsylvania to work as a Plastic Surgeon at the Guthrie Clinic. From May 2012 to May 2013, he worked for Sono Bello Body Contour Center, which opened a new clinic in King of Prussia, doing liposuction under local anesthesia. He accepted a Plastic Surgeon position at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky in June 2013, but after over a year, he decided to return to the private practice setting. He joined Dr. Golla in April 2015 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, bringing with him extensive experience and expertise in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery.
