Eyelid surgery is a plastic surgery that corrects the problem of aging eyelids like drooping and wrinkles. It is also known as blepharoplasty and involves removal of excess skin and fat from upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both. A change in the appearance of the eyelids can make one look younger and remove the tired look. Due to increasing age, wrinkles start appearing along the corners of the eyelids and the eyelids start sagging giving a wrinkly appearance. These problems can be corrected through an eyelid plastic surgery.

Procedure for Eyelid Surgery

Before undergoing the surgery, the plastic surgeon performs a thorough examination of the patient including the medical history of the patient. The doctor would discuss the detailed technique and advantages and disadvantages of the procedure. A patient should be tested for any allergies or medications. Every procedure is designed and customized to suit the needs of an individual. The doctor and the patient come to a consensus to achieve the desired results.

The procedure can be performed with local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Upper lid surgery usually takes around 35-40 minutes and can be done under local anesthesia. If both upper and lower eyelids are reshaped, the surgery can be performed under general anesthesia and could take around 1.5 to 2 hours. Some incisions are performed along the general creases while others are outside the creases in the corner of the eyelid. Incisions can be made behind the eyelids to remove fat and improve the eye contour without leaving any visible scars. Fat removal can give a hollowed look to the eyes, but we take care to reshape the eyelids by curving the incisions upwards at the border of the eyelids. Eyelid surgery is often combined with a skin resurfacing, browlift or a necklift surgery.

Recovery Process

Eyelids have a small healing time and the sutures can be removed in about 5- 9  days of the surgery. There are few minor bruises that disappear within few days. In order to prevent swelling, the patient is advised to sleep with the head raised. Medications are administered to fasten the healing process and prevent infection. There is minimal pain after this procedure. Ointments can be used to apply on the sutures and eye drops may also be administered. A patient can resume normal work within few hours of the surgery.

Patient Profile

Drooping eyelids are mostly caused due to aging so middle-aged men and women are suitable candidates for blepharoplasty. Diseases like thyroid can cause puffy eyes that can be fixed using eyelid surgery. A patient needs to undergo a medical examination before the surgery and should not be having a medical condition that may hamper with the surgery.

Side Effects and Risks

Patients have to undergo an ophthalmologic evaluation prior to the procedure. Also, Thyroid, dry eyes and eye disorders must be treated before undergoing the surgery as these disorders may slow down the healing process.
