What Is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic injection that is used to temporarily reduce the activity of the muscles that typically result in wrinkles and fine lines. Botox injections are focused on the following areas: “crow’s feet” or the small wrinkles radiating outward from the corners of each eye, frown lines, and forehead lines. In general botox is typically used on the upper part of the face while products such as dermal fillers are useful for the bottom half of the face in order to plump up lackluster skin and add volume to the face.

Who Is Botox For?

Botox is ideal for people that want to achieve a more youthful appearance. It  is used to freeze muscles in place and correct fine lines and moderate wrinkles. People with severe wrinkles or deep lines in the skin on the face do not serve as ideal candidates for Botox. It’s important to evaluate your individual skin type and skin characteristics in order to understand the results you may expect from receiving Botox treatment.

The Benefits of Botox

Botox results in a temporarily smoother face and younger appearance. It is most obvious when a person makes a facial expression that would typically result in wrinkling. Many men and women prefer to spend a relatively small up-front cost for the corrective and preventative uses that Botox provides as opposed to a major cosmetic surgery like a face lift or deep chemical peels. In this way, they can focus on treating their “problem areas” while still maintaining their natural beauty.

Aside from cosmetic purposes, Botox has also been used to treat a number of other medical conditions. According to the Mayo Clinic, Botox can be used to treat neck spasms or overactive bladder condition. The Mayo Clinic also notes that Botox may be a viable solution for people who experience migraines more than 15 days per month, a condition known as chronic migraine. Botox injections may be used under the arms for people who experience hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.

Botox is administered in a medical office setting, typically in under 30 minutes – which lets you get back to your day quicker, barring some minor bruising and swelling. Results are visible almost immediately after the product is administered. Botox is a relatively safe product, with little to no harmful reaction aside from some redness and swelling at the time and point of injection. The results of Botox can last up to six months, though the results differ between every individual. As can be expected with many cosmetic treatments, it is typical to undergo another Botox treatment once results diminish.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox, whose medical name is onabotulinumtoxinA, is a neurotoxin that temporarily inactivates muscles in place in order to restrict muscle contractions and movements that produce wrinkles and fine lines. Botox is also sometimes used as a preventative tool that stops new wrinkles from forming and prevents current wrinkles from getting worse.
